Here are the activities for the year. All in-person internal events are held at St Michael's Centre, NP7 5UD. Meeting times are second and fourth Mondays in each month, between 7:30pm and 9:30pm.
we are meeting in person at St Michael's unless explicitly stated otherwise. Having said this, we have discovered the power of Zoom in the reach it gives us to access high class presenters across the country and world. Leveraging this, half of our external presenters will deliver via Zoom. For these, we will still meet at St Michael's so we can chat and interact, before, during and after the presentation. If you want to watch from home, this is just fine and the Zoom link will be supplied.

---|---|---|
15-Jan | Photograph of the Year | In the first meeting of 2024, we'll be deciding on the Photograph of the Year, 2023, first finding the best digital and print, then finding the overall POTY from these two group winners. |
29-Jan | A Natural Miscellany with Allan Lloyd, ARPS, AWPF | Tonight, we have Allen Lloyd coming from Bristol to give us a mixed presentation including
wildlife, landscape and astro photography.
Remember to submit your entries to Photoentry (including images of prints) for the colour competition on 12-Feb. |
12-Feb | Open Colour Competition judged by Peter Weaver, LRSP, CPAGB, APAGB | Competitions start this year with open colour, which means you can enter any image (well, within limits of course), as long as it is in colour. Good luck and enjoy everyone's entries. |
26-Feb | Members evening: How Judges Think | Yes, it's a puzzle, sometimes. But then we've several judges within the club and more who have long experience of being baffled by judges' comments. Our judges will share experiences at the coalface and we can discuss competitions. Outcome might be that our photographs get higher scores! |
11-Mar | Art and Photography with Harry Gardiner, AWPF | Harry Gardiner has long explored the intersection between art and photography.
The worlds of art is full of knowledge about how to compose and construct an
effective image. Science, meanwhile, has also advanced in areas of perception.
Tonight, Harry will be detailing how our photography can improve from the
understanding he has gained in these areas over many years.
Remember to submit your entries to Photoentry (including images of prints) for the open competition on 25-Mar. |
25-Mar | Monochrome Competition judged by Peter Young, LRPS, CPAGB, AFIAP, HonPAGB | Our second competition of the year is open to any image - as long as it is monochrome. Tints such as sepia are allowed, but no 'colour'. |
15-Apr | Shooting People with Mike Martin, AWPF, EFIAP, BPE1* | Shooting with a camera, of course. Capturing the person and their character is a notoriously difficult subject. Tonight, Mike Martin is going to help us improve in this area. |
29-Apr | Members evening: Table Top Photography | This is an active evening, so bring your camera kit plus things to photograph (and maybe some lighting). We will include demos from members who have produced some fab and successful images, plus plenty of activity in creating interesting photographs yourself, all on a simple table. |
13-May | Member evening: A Year of Painting: What I have learned? with David Straker | Club member David did a course in painting last year, then took up painting as a hobby, with the intent of (a) having fun, and (b) looking for lessons that he could use in photography. This talk is about what he did and what he learned. |
20-May | Panel Competition judged by Dai Knight | Our third competition of the year is for panels of three to five images. Maximum one digital panel and one print panel per entrant. |
10-Jun | Waterscapes with Jonathan Genevaux | We have never had a 'Waterscape Photographer' present to us before, but as a specialist in the field, professional photographer Jonathan tonight will tell us more about this through his fabulous photography. |
24-Jun | Svarlbard: Life on the Cold Edge with Paul Alistair Collins | Paul is an award-winning professional nature photographer whose images have won many accolades, including Bird Photographer Of The Year. He also works in television, co-producing documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4 and Discovery Network. His talk tonight is a photographic journey across land and sea, fjords and tundra, celebrating the best of Arctic wildlife under the midnight sun - from Arctic Foxes hunting eider ducks, to the courtship rituals of migrant birds. |
08-Jul | Photo Walk | Out and about together in this Summer's evening, a walk somewhere nearby, probably ending up at a delightful pub! Bring your camera kit. |
21-Jul (Sunday) | Member Day: Visit to TBA | Bring your cameras to capture the wonder of wherever we go! |
Jul-Aug | Summer Break | Get out there, have fun, and take lots of photographs! |
09-Sep | Summer Show and Tell | Bring in your photos taken through the Summer (and earlier in the year). |
23-Sep | Strictly Telephoto with Phil Savoie | Firm favourite Phil Savoie is back! This year we have a popular talk on telephoto lenses,
covering their history and proven master techniques. In particular Phil will share hard-won tips and tricks
to capture the uncommon, including difficult subjects such as animals in flight, sports photography,
landscapes and using telephoto lenses for tricky macro shots.
Remember to submit your entries to Photoentry (including images of prints) for the open competition on 14th Oct. |
14-Oct | Open Competition judged by Mike Clatworthy | Here's our next completely open competitions, so you can enter whatever images you like! |
28-Oct | Member evening: Cambodia, with Tom Dee | Tom Dee has recently joined the club but comes with a brilliant pedigree, including being a part of the famous Inn Focus group that spend many years winning all kinds of competitions. Tonight, he will be showing his wonderful images from travels in Cambodia. |
11-Nov | A Picture Wherever You Turn with Keith and Lyn Sharples | The Outer Hebrides is a wild and wonderful photographer's paradise. Keith Sharples, a long-time
friend of Abergavenny club, and his wife, Lyn, have been there and captured the landscape, nature and place. Tonight, Keith
