Discount vouchers and free draws

Have you ever been given a discount voucher for a store? Something like '10% off for all orders over $70'. Of course it's all a ploy to get you to spend more and of course also they will make good profit from you. As they say in Yorkshire, 'You don't get owt for nowt' (you don't get something for nothing).

I met a new variant of this recently. A nice young lady approached me in an enthusiastic manner, asking me if I'd like to participate in a free draw. Rather suspicious, I went along with it. After all, there was nothing to lose and I always enjoy being the target of persuasive attempts.

With a flourish, the lady indicated a transparent rotating box containing many paper slips of different hues, from which I could retrieve a ticket which just might get me a great discount. As I opened my ticket, she exclaimed with glee! I'd won! It was a 10% discount! I don't know if there were better discounts, but I was clearly supposed to be excited too.

I was impressed with their sales technique, but declined the chance to bag a bargain.
